August 2006 News
Dear BSU Members and Friends,
Well I celebrated my July birthday in big way. I was in charge of our annual silent church auction for missions.
You should have seen our Sunday morning parade in the auditorium. I will try to send you a picture later. It wasn’t
pretty, but it was very effective!! I did feel older when the day was over. Now some very important news:
In mid August you will receive a letter from Gerald Glasco. He is our new BSU Secretary and Treasurer. Please read
it carefully. It will be filled with information. It is also your registration letter for the BSU Annual Reunion.
That date again is September 28-29, 2006 at the Walnut Street Baptist Church in Carbondale Il. Please read the letter
carefully and return it as soon as possible.
I have several news items to share with you:
- Wilma Chambers Tefft, who makes her home with her daughter Audrey, is not well. She needs our prayers. Rinnie Spencer keeps
me informed about Wilma. Thanks Rinnie.
- Betty Walker has a new email address bwalker241@juno.com
- Lora Blackwell tells me that while in Ridgecrest during Music week she suffered a severe kidney
infection which is septia. It affected every system of her body. She is still recuperating at
home. She is grateful to be alive. We are glad you are better Lora - See you in Sept. Lora plans to
sing with the "New Chapel Singers"
- Darrell and Verona Highsmith and their children and grandchildren (10 total) spent 11 days in England and Scotland in mid July.
They had lived there for 2 years and their daughter was born there.
- Phil and Lotella Cole celebrated a golden wedding anniversary on June 15. Congratulations!
- Bill and Joyce Purdue celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary See what she wrote me:
Helen, Thought this might be news you could use for August. Bill and I were married while we were in college 65 years ago. At the
time he was president of the BSU. We will celebrate our 65th Wedding Anniversary Aug. 20th. Our children are having a reception
for us at our house on Aug. 20. We are looking forward to that. Wish some of the BSUers could be here. (I'm afraid there aren't
many left who would remember us.) We are so sorry that we have not been able to attend any of the reunion-- have really wanted to --
but Bill hasn't been able to travel that far for quite sometime. He isn't preaching any more and that is the thing he misses most.
Joyce Purdue
Now a few lines about the reunion. I think you will enjoy every minute you are there. I always have you in mind when I plan these Reunions. Make every effort to be present.
We will miss those who have gone on to be with the Lord this past year. We have lost Robert Bellinger, Charles Morris, Bernard Williams, and most recently
Maurice Swinford. The reunion will not be the same without Maurice. However he would want us to meet and renew those good times spent at SIU and those wonderful
BSU years. Sooo watch for your registration letter after August 15. Please return it as soon as possible.
Your Bsu Friend and President,
Helen Green Galloway
