March 2008 News

Dear BSU Friends,

I am sure glad to see February of 2008 leave Collinsville IL. This has been our coldest month of the winter season. We have had single digit temperatures several days during the month. It has been windy, cold, snowy, dark, dreary and a few other words that I dare not use. Those of you in Arizona, Texas, Florida, Calif. stay there for a few more days at least. You will need to check the weather before you come back .Ha. Now, you know that I did not waste the Lord's time while all this was going on. I have been busy at my church, with my family, with BSU mail, and making plans for the 16Th Annual BSU Reunion. I didn't let a few cold days keep me idle. However, I am glad to see a new month appear on the calendar. So, Happy March 2008 to each of you .Easter is March 23 this year.

I have heard from several of you during the month. I love hearing from you. Several have new E-mail addresses: Harold and Susan Mills (themills63@verizon.net); Catherine Neely (cegneely@gmail.com). I had a very interesting letter from Dr. Curt Scarborough. If you would like to read it--let me know--I will forward it on to you. Many will remember Curt and Ruth Ann (Floyd Jent's daughter). I mentioned Curt in my Feb. news letter. This is a reminder that I added them to our BSU mailing list

Gerald Steffy wrote and told me about the death of Betty Jo Lewis (Feb.10). She was the wife of Larry Lewis, President of Hannibal Lagrange college and President of the Home Mission Board. Some of you will know Larry. We are sadden about this and covet your prayer for Larry during these difficult days.

I had a nice letter from the Christoffs. (Bill and Mildred) The Christoffs are two of our oldest living BSU members. The live in New Albany IN. Check out their wedding anniversary picture on the web site They were married in Dec. 1943 (65 years.) They are well and send me greetings often. I love hearing from them. They covet your prayers..

I received some very unusual pictures from Marc Mccoy a few weeks ago. They included old pictures of down town Carbondale. He sent a picture of the Post Office, the Library , and the Holden Hospital all taken in the late 1930's and early 40's. Among the pictures was a picture of Eugene Dodds (a very active BSU member during the early 40's). Dodd was also Freshman President of SINU in 39-40. See we were somebody even in those early years. Thank God for the Baptist Student Union beginning in the late 30's and early 40's. Thank you Marc for the pictures. I hope to have them on the web site in near future.

In my Feb. News letter I told you that Frank and Dorothy Gericke lived in Texas. Well, Bob Mann let me know immediately that the Gericke's live in Cottonwood, Arizona. Bob keeps me straight!! I meant to say that the Gericke's were to be in Texas for a month or so. Surely I am entitled to a mistake now and then!! Thanks Bob keep me honest.

Now for your prayer requests: These I know about-- Dale Clemens, Margaret and Myron Dillow, Thom Harvengt (his wife and sister),and others mentioned above.

I am making special plans for our 16th.Annual Reunion. That date again is Sept.25-26 2008. Our Theme is the Nifty Fifties. I have invited Elvis to be with us. I am anxiously awaiting his reply. Nate Adams has agreed to be our speaker again this year.We want to keep informed about Baptist work in Illinois. He is our best source. We will meet in Collinsville,Il. The Meadow Height Baptist Church is getting ready for you all. Let me hear from you if you have news or requests. I am here for you. ( see pictures and names)
