October 2009 News

Dear BSU Members,

Well, we have just finished our 17th BSU Reunion. I sent you a copy of the summary that Sue Glasco had written. Sue did such a good job that I need not comment on it. But, I will anyway. I will also send you a copy of the summary I prepared for you. The reunion was held in Carbondale--where it all started. On Thursday night we met at the Baptist Student Center. This is where our current BSU members meet. The director is Chase Abner. He was on our program and told us about the work of the BSU on the campus now . He is a wonderful young family man and I was challenged by his program of work. Our students are in good hands. On Friday we met at the University Baptist Church where many of our BSU members were members while attending SIU in the 40's, 50's and 60's. This was a homecoming for many of our guests. We were made welcome at the church. We had a lovely homecoming and enjoyed ourselves so very much. When you glance at the statistical report below, you will have some idea of our program. Our theme "I Remember When" was a constant reminder of who we were, where we had been, and what we have become.

1. I have added two new BSU members to my mailing list. Willam M and Carol (Stuckey) Fulkerson The Fulkerson's live at 505 Rays Rd. Stone Mountain, GA 30083 Their email address is wmfccci@comcast.net. William graduated from SIU in 1959 and Carol in 1960, William was pastor at Lakeland before going to SBTS. He retired from HMB in 1997.
2. I also added the name of Bob White (Class of 59) address is 4494 87th St., Urbandale, IA 50322. Phone number is 515-225-2049. His email address is BEBUFFALO@aol.com. Bob is a friend of Gene and Ginger Wells
3. I have removed the email addresses of Larry Sledge, Don Bethel, Charles Gray, Jim Ebbs, Bob Cullen and the email address which reads Ab13@hcrs.net (I do not know the name) These email address are returned over and over again. If you can get me the correct email I will be more than happy to add them back on.
   
4. I saw in the Illinois Baptist that Edwin Burdell O'Neil passed away September 8, 2009. He lived in Rock Falls, Il. Nomabel, his wife died in March 2009. Burdell was BSU member in the late 40's. He and Nomabel had been married 64 years.
5. Shirley Dawson reported to me that Warren Dawson had passed away August 9th in 2008. I am sorry I did not know about Warren's death. He was an active BSU Member in the 4o's. I noticed I have two old pictures of Warren on the website under Vintage Pictures. You might like to look it up. www.bsu-siu.com. Look under Vintage pictures.
6. Fannie Dodds has a new email address Fanniemadhattie@tds.net
7. Dale Clemens remains in poor health. Continue to remember him in your prayers.
8. A note from Peggy Phillips reads: "Gene is having trouble with his Parkinson Disease. He is very unsteady on his feet. Our son Doug has moved to Hawaii to serve as a church planter." The Phillips are in Florida and welcome visitors. .
9. I have wrong addresses for the following people. Help me to correct this if you can (post-office informed me):
   Dolores Alexander---Donna Barnfield--Kennett Cannon-- J.A. Hauser--Mary Tufty- Annetta Vickery- and Gregory Grigg.
10. We wanted also to report the death of Byrl Sims, husband of Augusta Page Sims. She called us today and said her husband had died in a nursing home North of Columbus, Ohio in late July. We knew he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's Syndrome more than a year ago. Augusta is confined to her home, across the road from the homes of two of her daughters who are very good to her and look in several times a day.
