September 2011

Bye, Bye, August. You came, You stayed 31 days, then you left. While you were here you gave us 10 days of 90 degree weather, very little rain, several cool nights, lots of sunshine, and flirted with a glimpse of Fall, then you left us. We enjoyed your stay. We were able to attend the St Louis Muny Opera twice, attend a Cardinal ball game and enjoyed the blessing of cooler weather. Our Church had a huge Indoor Yard Sale. We were promoting the Building Fund. It was a lot of work--yet a lot of fun--and we were supporting a needy cause. Life is good, our blessings are many, and time seems to fly by. This is BSU Reunion month. Many of our BSU friends will gather in Carbondale to renew old friendships. They will be singing, "Happy Days are here again". Those were the "Good old Days"to be sure!! I love you all and hope my news items are important to you. I appreciate your cards and letters.

  1. Irma Cramer Swope died August 10. You all remember her husband Lee Swope. Irma died in Paris, Il. where she made her home. Her daughter, Diana, lives there. I don't think Irma was BSU member.

  2. A note about Phronsie From Pat Bellinger Helen, I appreciate your regular news. I asked my daughter, Ruth, today about Phronsie Quinn (They are members of the same church and Ruth's husband is the pastor so they keep up with members.) Her response:
Phronsie is at Episopal Church Home. Right up street from where dad was. She is doing okay. Still in rehab. Don't know when she's coming home. When she does, she'll probably overdo. 7504 Westport Road - Louisville, KY 40222

  3. Barbara Highsmith writes: "Yes, we do remember Don McRaven. He was in our wedding and is a very good friend." We were wondering about where he was. The last we heard he was in Chicago. Thanks, Barbara, for the email address. Red rose dlmcraven@sbcglobal.net

  4. A note from Polly Wright:
A BELATED HAPPY BIRTHDAY to you and thank you for your birthday messsage to me. I'm a few days older than you and still hanging on. I don't enjoy being an "OLD WOMAN" -- do you? I enjoy your letters, Helen. and wish you all the best . Love, Polly Wright (Answer) Helen says. "So far I am not an old woman!!"

  5. Do you read Monty Knight's blog? www.drmontyknight.wordpress.com. Helen: please pass this info along to others on the SIU-BSU e-mail list. Thanks, Monty

  6. A note from Helen Williams:
Helen, to answer your question. I have the same e-mail, house address, phone number as always (and have had for the last 40+ years.) I GOT one BSU letter. Were more than one sent out? That's the trouble with having a "common" name. I read somewhere that Williams for a sur-name is the most common English sur-name known. I believe it! I always use my middle initial at doctor's offices!

  7. A note from Verona Highsmith:
Marshall and Candy's address needs to be changed. After he died she moved to Southlake, TX to be near her daughter and family. Her address is Candace Malone Highsmith, l70 Stonebridge Lane, Southlake, TX 76092 Ph. 817-431-0747. She stays well, except for RA pain.

  8. Please note that I have a new email address. Thanks. estanderfer@gmail.com Ernest Standerfer

  9. Marc L. McCoy: Helen, did not know if you got my past message, but my father, Marcus McCoy, has been in Summit Medical Center in Nashville, TN area for the past 12 days with a stroke. Prognosis is not very good but he is upbeat, and we hope to bring him back to my sister, Maria McCoy Aronica's house next week. He will not be well enough to bring to the BSU reunion this fall, which saddens him. Please keep him in your prayers.

  10. Wendall Garrison writes:
My latest daily devotional book is finally available: “CREEKSIDE TRAIL, Following Jesus through the Gospel of Luke.” It has been a five-year writing journey. So it was a magic moment yesterday for Mary and me when the truck unloaded 105 boxes of books! For more information or to make a purchase, visit my website: www.wendellgarrison.com Or call me: 618-233-0560.

  11. I've added a new BSUer to our directory mailing list from the class of 62.

    Eugene and Irma Wall
    1943 N. Hwy 79
    Elsberry, MO 63343
    genewall@starhope.org

  12. Carol Smith says:
Helen, on the BSU directory, my email should be ceejayess31@gmail.com [rather than ceejayess@gmail.com]
    Thanks. See you next month.

  13. Wendell Garrison: Some time ago I read in Country magazine that fawns are born scent-free. So a mother doe will often stay some distance away from her baby because she instinctively knows that her scent will attract predators. While appearing to have abandoned her fawn, the doe is actually caring for her offspring. Could that sometimes be what’s going on when we feel alone and neglected. Sarah Lancaster writes: This reminds me of a similar story about a mama giraffe. In the wild, after the baby has been born and succeeds in standing on those stilt-like legs, the mother kicks the baby and causes it to have to get back up again and again.. This is repeated until the baby can get up with ease.

Well, that is it for the month of August. I think of you often as I record the news each month, We are all getting older but wiser. I know that is true of me. So, the wise thing for me to do is to say goodbye for now.

Here's a little closing from Jim Cox:

1. My wife sat down next to me as I was flipping channels.
She asked, "What's on TV?"
I said, "Dust." And then the fight started...

2. My wife was hinting about what she wanted for our upcoming anniversary. She said, "I want something shiny that goes from 0 to 150 in about 3 seconds."
I bought her a bathroom scale..
And then the fight started......

3. I rear-ended a car this morning...the start of a REALLY bad day!
The driver got out of the other car, and he was a DWARF!!
He looked up at me and said 'I am NOT Happy!'
So I said, 'Well, which one ARE you then?'
That's how the fight started.....

4. I took my wife to a restaurant.
The waiter, for some reason, took my order first.
"I'll have the rump steak, rare, please."
He said, "Aren't you worried about the mad cow?"
"Nah, she can order for herself."
And that's when the fight started.....
