July 2010 News
July news is always special. It is the month I can say, "Happy Birthday Helen," as well as "Happy Fourth of July" to all of you. I have read that all July babies are special. I believe that to be true. I have two special nieces who have July birthdays--and then there is me. You all know I am special!! My health remains good. I have been able to attend 4 Cardinal baseball games at the new stadium in St Louis. Won them all too!! I am taking a new drug for the nerves in my feet (a result of Chemo) I think it is helping. I have only been on it for a month or so. A note from Ginger tells me that she has everything under control for our BSU Reunion in September. I do hope you are planning to attend. We have food, and so much fun, and fellowship galore. I wouldn't want you to miss a minute of it. Now, my news items. Let's get down to business--BSU business.

  1. This note from George Casey.

We are proud of Jerry. Jerry's composition, "Yet I Will Rejoice!," was presented by the 70-member Otterbein College Concert Choir and 20-instrument orchestra this afternoon and went very, very well. The director asked Jerry to talk about the work, based on a passage in Habakkuk, prior to the performance. The story, in brief: Times were tough. Crops were failing. Animals were starving. The prophet said, however, "Yet, I will Rejoice in the God of my Salvation!" This and other compositions will be on a CD that will be released next January. The students liked the idea of having a release party when it's ready! A student who sang in the choir told her afterward that the message meant a lot to him as he learned and then sang it, "My family is going through a lot of economic problems right now. This song helped me."
  2. Bill Christoff's 85th Birthday was June 7th; Mildred Christoff's 84th Birthday is Nov 6. Didn't know if everyone had Mom and Dad's new address and they would sure be tickled to have a birthday email greeting or a card through the mail...thanks to each and everyone of you who have remembered them with love and prayers all these years....God Bless You

  3. A sad note from Bill Fulkerson concerning the death of Melissa Stuckey:
"We sadly notify all of you that Melissa Stuckey Clendinen, of Sidney, Ohio, passed away on May 25. She was a daughter of Don and Ruth Stuckey of Medora, Illinois. In her 48 years she had a tremendous impact on the lives of so many in her town and in all the places where Melissa had ever lived. She leaves her husband, Harry and three children at home and one married daughter . Melissa was a BSUer in the early 80's. Melissa had fought against her cancer for more than10 years and finally lost her battle."

  5. Did you know that Leona Davis is home from the hospital? She has moved from Vandalia to an apartment in Springfield . Her granddaughter has moved in with her. She will be with her in the evening time and Leona will be having therapy with the Health Care Dept. (Copied)
  6. Bob Osborne, husband of Eileen Osborne (50Ős BSUer) had a mild heart attack last week. He was transferred from Vandalia to St. JohnŐs in Springfield. Pray for BobŐs quick recovery and he will be back on the golf course soon. (copied from GW June letter)
  7. Alene Mifflin, 86, died May 29 2010, at Barnes. A member of University Baptist ChurchAlum Association and worked as a department secretary in engineering. Survived by husband A. B. Mifflin of Carbondale, her son Michael Mifflin of Alto Pass and daughter Rebecca Mifflin of Dallas. Many will remember Alene at the registration table when we met at the Baptist Foundation a few years ago. in Carbondale since 1950, she was also lifetime member of SIUC.
  8. I found this BSU member on Face Book . Here is her reply to my question , "Are you a BSU Member? Some of you may know Donna Voliva Pottorff and her husband Mark. Her Answer----- " Why yes, Helen, my husband and I both lived at the Baptist Student Center (before they closed it down) and were members of the Baptist Student Union (renamed Bap. Student Ministries when we were there.) My husband was the BSU pres. for a few years back in 1985-86. The BSU helped me get through those first college years and helped me stay focused on God. I loved it!
  9. I have written Donna Pottorfff and ask for an email address. I will share when I get it.
  10. Continue to send me any BSU news you know about. I will try to keep the web site current with updates.etc www.bsu-siu.com
